Connecticut’s five Congressmen paid $1.2 million to 104 employees in the second quarter, according to the website Legistorm, including 14 who made more than $20,000.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3rd, had the most expensive staff, $267,900, while Rep. John Larson, D-1st, had the most employees who made more than $20,000 during the quarter, five, including two executive assistants.
Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th, paid 18 employees a total of $221,782. He is on track to pay his staff just over $900,000 this year, the least costly of the delegation.
Murphy is running for U.S. Senate. He faces former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, of Middletown, and state Rep. William Tong, of Stamford, in the Democratic primary.
Just behind Murphy was Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th, who paid 22 employees $229,094. His office is also on track to spend less than $1 million this year.
Francis Creighton, chief of staff for Murphy, made $36,000 this quarter. Joseph “Joe” W. Dunn, Murphy’s legislative director, earned $20,625.
Himes chief of state Jason Cole earned $35,499 for the quarter. He didn’t pay any other employees more than $20,000 for the quarter.
Larson paid 22 employees $254,093. He is on track to pay his staff more than $1.1 million for the year.
Shelley Marie Rubino earned $21,562.50 as chief executive director for Larson’s office and the same amount from the House Democratic Caucus as advisor to the chairman (Larson) for total quarterly income of $43,125. John F. Rossi III, district chief of staff, made $32,499.99.
Maureen T. Moriarty, Larson’s constituency director, earned $22,100.01. Two senior executive assistants, Lee Alexander Slater and Linda Christiana, earned just over $22,000 each.
DeLauro paid 20 employees $267,900. She is on track to pay her staff more than $1 million this year.
Leticia “Letty” Mederos made $31,577.01 as assistant to DeLauro on the House Appropriations Committee plus $8,576.50 as her chief of staff for a total quarterly income of $40,153.51.
District director Jennifer Cosenza Lamb made $27,500.01; legislative director Daniel “Dan” L. Zeitlin, $21,750; and Connecticut scheduler Mara R. Saccente, $20,000.01.
Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd, paid 22 employees $250,730. He is on track to pay his employees over $1 million for the year.
In 2007 and 2008, Courtney’s office spent the most out of the Connecticut delegation when all expenses, including salaries, were tallied.
Jason John Gross, Courtney’s chief of staff, made $39,369.99 for the quarter. His district director, Jennifer “Jenny” Contois Concetta earned $23,225.01.
Funny…… The real answer should be the population of the United States for population served, but it’s probably 5,336 the same as the number of staff. If you write a letter or e-mail your congressman, the reply is their standard form letter on the subject stating their stand on the subject and not addressing your position on the matter. So they just waste your time, my time and our tax money.
could you include population served in the calculation? $ per capita or something like that? thanks
I’m sure they’re all into it to do good work and also for the salary. These figures are for the quarter so multiply times 4 and Larson’s employees average $50,000 each and DeLauro $53,580 average. Courtney’s Chief of staff makes $157,480 for the year, that’s pretty hefty, just under Joe’s salary of $174,000 base. What is the magic number for the number of employees needed? They have 20 and 22 except for Chris at 18. That’s a good amount of staff per representative. Now multiply this by the number of people in Congress nationwide and it is significant and according to 2009 figures 5,336 staff. The average salary for a congressional chief of staff is $120,051.55, according to the Open House Project website. The average salary for district directors is $84,346.63. Deputy chiefs of staff make $84,121.66, with legislative directors earning an average of $72,137.79 and deputy district directors making $61,389.93 on average. Congressional communications directors earn $58,359.05 on average, and press secretaries make an average salary of $50,524.05. The salary for a congressional aide is $39,906.24 and for a staff assistant, it is $29,890.54. This is non-partisan and applies to all in Washington.
And with all this staff and expenditures, they still can’t fix the mess they made in Washington.

I guess Matt feels Shelly Rubino’s $172,500 salary and Francis Creighton’s $144,000 and the others, isn’t a lot of money! Do you think they also get health benefits and a pension as well? A little expense account, etc.
This goes to show you, the staff in Congress are not in it for the salary..maby some of them are in it to do good work.
Big mistake is you are not factoring in seniority. For example, Rosa has been in office the longest so she has staff that have been there for 20 yrs. No one else has been there longer than 12.
Gerry,
Each member of Congress gets a total budget, but within that amount they can allocate it between salary, travel, office space and other expenses how they want. And, yes, it is taxpayer money.

Who determines the number of staff and what they get paid? And is it our tax money paying for all this useless staff?
